ASPECT RATIO PLANNER

Scale images, videos, and layouts perfectly without stretching or distorting them. Enter your original dimensions to discover the exact ratio, and then calculate new widths or heights that maintain that exact proportion.

Example
16 : 9

2. New Dimensions

Change one value below, and the other will calculate automatically to match the original aspect ratio.

What is an Aspect Ratio?

An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and the height of an image, video, or screen. It is typically expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, like 16:9.

It's important to note that an aspect ratio does not dictate the physical size or resolution in pixels. An image that is 1920x1080 pixels has a 16:9 aspect ratio, but an image that is only 160x90 pixels also has a 16:9 aspect ratio. They are the same shape, just different sizes.

The Aspect Ratio Formula

If you have an original image and you need to resize it to fit into a specific container (like a blog post width) without stretching or squishing it, you must use proportional math. Our calculator automates this using the following formulas:

  • To find New Height: (H1 / W1) × W2 = H2
  • To find New Width: (W1 / H1) × H2 = W2

Common Standard Aspect Ratios

  • 16:9 (Widescreen): The universal standard for high-definition video, television, YouTube, and most modern computer monitors.
  • 9:16 (Vertical Video): The exact inverse of widescreen. It is the native format for smartphones, TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
  • 4:3 (Standard/Legacy): The aspect ratio of older CRT televisions and computer monitors. Still heavily used by Apple for the iPad line.
  • 1:1 (Square): Perfect symmetry. The original standard for Instagram posts and common for profile pictures.
  • 21:9 (Ultrawide): Used for cinematic movie releases (anamorphic format) and ultrawide gaming monitors.
