Body Mass Index (BMI) is a universally recognized numerical scale used to broadly categorize a person as Underweight, Healthy Weight, Overweight, or Obese based on their overall tissue mass (muscle, fat, and bone) relative to their height.

Understanding the Standard BMI Categories
- Under 18.5 (Underweight): Being severely underweight can compromise your immune system, bone density, and hormonal balance. A strategic caloric surplus is usually recommended.
- 18.5 – 24.9 (Normal / Healthy): For the vast majority of the population, maintaining a BMI in this window correlates with the lowest risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
- 25.0 – 29.9 (Overweight): Indicates a higher body mass. While some athletes fall into this category naturally due to muscle weight, for most, it signals excess adipose tissue (fat).

The Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a fantastic, fast screening tool for population-level health, it has a notable flaw when applied to individuals: it does not measure body composition. Because muscle tissue is substantially denser than fat tissue, a heavily muscled bodybuilder and an out-of-shape sedentary individual might both weigh 220 lbs at 6 feet tall, giving them the exact same "Overweight" BMI.
