Cardiovascular exercise is not a monolithic activity. Zone 2: Fat Burn / Basic Endurance (60-70%)

Moving into moderate-to-vigorous exercise, Zone 3 trains your cardiovascular system to become more efficient at pumping blood and utilizing oxygen. Zone 4: Anaerobic Threshold (80-90%)
This is intense, heavy breathing exercise. In Zone 4, you cross your "lactate threshold"—the point where your body produces lactic acid faster than it can clear it. Training in this zone improves your body's ability to tolerate high levels of lactic acid, allowing you to sustain higher intensity speeds for longer durations. You can typically only sustain Zone 4 for a few minutes at a time.
Zone 5: Maximum Effort / VO2 Max (90-100%)
This is an all-out, maximum-effort sprint. Your heart and lungs are working at maximum capacity. This zone is exclusively utilized by well-conditioned athletes for short bursts (like HIIT intervals or track sprints) to improve top-end speed and neuromuscular recruitment. It cannot be sustained for more than a few seconds.
