Energy and Work: The Currency of the Universe
In physics, Energy is defined as the quantitative property that is transferred to a body or to a physical system, recognizable in the performance of Work and in the form of heat and light. It is arguably the most fundamental concept in science because of the First Law of Thermodynamics: Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; it can only be transferred or changed from one form to another.
When you eat a piece of bread (chemical energy), your body converts it into kinetic energy (muscle movement) and thermal energy (body heat). When coal is burned, its chemical energy becomes thermal energy, which turns a turbine (mechanical energy), which spins a generator to create electrical energy. This entire chain is simply different forms of "Work" being calculated across various unit scales.
The Metric Standard: The Joule (J)
In the International System of Units (SI), the base unit for energy and work is the Joule (J). By mathematical definition, one Joule is the amount of work done when a force of one Newton pushes an object over a distance of one meter ($W = F \times d$).
Because the Joule bridges the gap between force and distance, it is the anchor point for all modern physics. It takes roughly one Joule of energy to lift a medium-sized apple one meter into the air.
Electrical Energy: The Watt-Hour (Wh)
While Joules are perfect for physics equations, they are far too small to measure the electricity powering modern civilization. The power grid measures energy in Kilowatt-hours (kWh).
To understand a kWh, you must remember the relationship between Energy and Power. Power (measured in Watts) is the rate of energy transfer (1 Watt = 1 Joule per second). Therefore, a Watt-hour is a unit of Energy representing exactly 1 Watt of power sustained for one hour (3,600 seconds).
If you run a 1,000-Watt (1 kW) space heater for exactly one hour, you have consumed 1 Kilowatt-hour of energy. Because $1,000 \text{ Watts} \times 3,600 \text{ seconds} = 3,600,000$, we know mathematically that 1 kWh is exactly equal to 3.6 Megajoules (MJ).
Thermal Energy: BTUs and Calories
Before the metric system was globally adopted, different industries created their own energy units based on how heat affected water.
The BTU (British Thermal Unit)
The BTU is the traditional Imperial unit of heat. It is defined as the amount of energy required to heat exactly one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. Today, it is heavily used in the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) industry. A natural gas furnace or outdoor grill will have its total energy output rated in BTUs.
The Great Calorie Confusion
The calorie (cal) was the metric equivalent to the BTU. One "small calorie" is the amount of energy required to heat one gram of water by one degree Celsius (roughly 4.184 Joules).
However, when scientists began measuring the energy content of food, the "small calorie" resulted in numbers that were too large to print neatly on packaging. As a workaround, nutritionists began using the Kilocalorie (kcal)—which is exactly 1,000 small calories—but lazily decided to refer to it on food labels simply as a "Calorie" with a capital C.

The Quantum Realm: Electronvolts (eV)
On the completely opposite end of the spectrum is the Electronvolt. This unit is used exclusively by particle physicists and quantum mechanics. One electronvolt is the amount of kinetic energy gained by a single electron accelerating from rest through an electric potential difference of one volt in a vacuum.
Because an electron is infinitesimally small, one eV equates to a staggeringly tiny amount of Joules ($1.602 \times 10^{-19} \text{ J}$). To put this in perspective, a single flying mosquito possesses about a trillion electronvolts of kinetic energy.
