Decoding Electronics: How to Read Resistor Color Codes

Through-hole resistors are foundational components in electrical engineering. Because these carbon-film and metal-film components are often too small to print legible numbers on, manufacturers use the international Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) color-coding standard to indicate their resistance (measured in Ohms, $\Omega$), tolerance, and temperature coefficient. 1. The 4-Band Resistor

The 4-band resistor is the most common variety found in basic DIY electronics and hobbyist kits (like Arduino starter packs). It relies on two significant digits.

  • Band 1 & 2: The first two significant digits of the resistance value. (e.g., Red = 2, Violet = 7, giving "27").
  • Band 3 (Multiplier): The number of zeros to append to the end. (e.g., Orange = $\times 1,000$). Our total is now 27,000 $\Omega$, or 27 k$\Omega$.
  • Band 4 (Tolerance): The margin of error acceptable in the manufacturing process. Gold ($\pm 5\%$) and Silver ($\pm 10\%$) are the most common.

2. The High-Precision 5-Band Resistor

In high-fidelity audio equipment and sensitive medical devices, engineers require tighter tolerances. 5-band resistors accommodate an extra digit to provide a higher degree of granularity.

  • Bands 1, 2 & 3: The three significant digits. (e.g., Brown, Black, Black = "100").
  • Band 4 (Multiplier): The multiplying factor. (e.g., Red = $\times 100$). The result is 10,000 $\Omega$, or 10 k$\Omega$.
  • Band 5 (Tolerance): Precision resistors usually feature Brown ($\pm 1\%$) or Red ($\pm 2\%$) bands.

3. The 6-Band Resistor (Temperature Coefficient)

Environmental factors severely impact resistance. As components heat up under load, their electrical resistance shifts. A 6-band resistor is identical to a 5-band resistor, but it adds a final color band denoting the Temperature Coefficient (TCR). Measured in ppm/K (parts per million per degree Kelvin), it tells engineers exactly how much the resistance will fluctuate as temperatures rise. For example, a Brown 6th band indicates a shift of 100 ppm/K.

A Standard Mnemonic Device
