How Does Date Calculation Work?
Calculating dates might seem straightforward, but it gets complicated quickly when you factor in leap years, the varying lengths of months, and the concept of business days. Whether you are generating an invoice deadline, predicting a delivery date, or planning a project roadmap, precise date math is critical.
Adding and Subtracting Calendar Days
When you add standard calendar days, weeks, or years to a starting date, the calculation moves linearly across the Gregorian calendar.
- Weeks: A standard week is always exactly 7 days. Adding 3 weeks is identical to adding 21 days.
- Months: Month arithmetic is trickier. If you add 1 month to January 31st, the resulting date theoretically lands on February 31st, which doesn't exist. Standard calendar logic (and the logic used by Rapid Calc) "snaps" this date back to the last valid day of the target month—meaning it will result in February 28th (or 29th on a leap year).
- Leap Years: Every four years (with exceptions for century years not divisible by 400), an extra day is added to February. Our calculator natively handles leap year interpolations flawlessly.
What is a Business Day?
A "Business Day" (or working day) typically refers to Monday through Friday. When calculating project timelines, shipping estimates, or banking clearance dates, weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) must be excluded from the math.
Example: If today is Friday, and you need to calculate "3 business days from today," you skip Saturday and Sunday. The timeline moves to Monday (Day 1), Tuesday (Day 2), and lands on Wednesday (Day 3).
Are Public Holidays Skipped?
Because Rapid Calc is a global tool used by people across hundreds of countries, public holidays are not automatically skipped. A bank holiday in the United States does not apply to a user calculating dates in the United Kingdom or India. If your timeframe includes a recognized national holiday, you will need to manually add 1 additional day to your final calculation.
