How Internet Speed Tests Calculate Bandwidth

Testing an internet connection involves artificially saturating a network link to measure its absolute capacity constraints. When you initiate this speed test, your browser acts as the client requesting data chunks of increasing sizes from a Content Delivery Network (CDN) edge server. Because the server is typically geographically close to your location (thanks to Anycast routing), it eliminates long-distance routing delays, allowing the test to measure the pure throughput provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Understanding the Core Network Metrics

  • Download Speed (Mbps): Measures how rapidly data is pulled from a remote server to your local machine. High download speeds are critical for streaming 4K video, downloading large files, and loading media-heavy web pages.
  • Upload Speed (Mbps): Measures how quickly your machine can push data back to a remote server. This metric governs the quality of your video conferencing streams, cloud backup speeds, and live broadcasting capabilities. Upload is traditionally capped lower than download on residential asymmetrical connections.
  • Latency / Ping (ms): The reaction time of your connection. It is the time taken in milliseconds for a packet of data to travel from your computer to a server and back. Low latency is essential for competitive online gaming and snappy web navigation.
  • Jitter (ms): Measures the variance or fluctuation in latency over time. A connection with high jitter means packets are arriving at erratic intervals, which causes stuttering in VoIP calls (like Zoom or Skype) even if the overall bandwidth is high.

Traditional speed test applications bounce data off centralized data centers, which can skew results based on server congestion or peering agreements.
